Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Over 30 years ago, a group of dedicated EMS professionals, firefighters, and others, came together to form FL1 DMAT, one of the initial Federal Disaster Medical Assistance Teams. With the diminished support from Tallahassee for what was the State Medical Response Team based in Ft. Walton Beach and recognizing there were continuing needs in the ten counties encompassed by the Emerald Coast Healthcare Coalition, two new entities emerged:

  • Emerald Coast Crisis Stress Team—First Responders helping First Responders to maintain resilience in highly stressful circumstances.
  • FloridaOne Disaster Response Medical Team (FDRMT)—The group behind this information leaflet and serving our neighbors in Northwest Florida.

FDRMT’s home is provided by FloridaOne, Inc., a 501(c) based in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, that similarly provides the home base of operations for the Emerald Coast Healthcare Coalition, the Emerald Coast Crisis Stress Team, and Florida 1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (FL1 DMAT). While we have over fifty individuals involved in these Teams, we are always IN NEED OF MORE people.  WE NEED:

Physicians
Physician Assistants
Nurse Practitioners
Registered Nurses
Licensed Practical Nurses
Paramedics
EMTs
EMRs
Pharmacists
Pharmacy Technicians
Safety specialists
Administration specialists
Logisticians
Planning specialists
Communications specialists
Security specialist
Public Information experts
Veterinarians
Veterinary Technicians
Mental health specialists from ECCST

The plan is for FDRMT to work with healthcare and other key partners collaboratively to build, strengthen, and sustain a healthcare preparedness and response system.  Our objective is to train, exercise, and utilize our skills before, during, and after an emergency to ensure that our Northwest Florida neighbors can mitigate, respond, and recover quickly.  Ultimately, here is what we hope to achieve.

RESPONSE GOAL: To be on-site and ready to receive patients within 6 hours of initial activation.

RESPONSE CAPABILITY GOAL: To receive and treat 250 patients per day for 72-hours without outside assistance.

GOAL FOR SERVING COMMUNITY EVENTS: To provide primary care medical personnel and equipment for the duration of any community event for which FDRMT is contracted to serve.  For critical emergency medical care situations arising during such a planned event, FDRMT will immediately transfer care of such patients to the local Emergency Medical Services system.

SMALL STAFF REGIONAL SERVICES OBJECTIVES:

  • Shelter staffing in times of disaster;
  • Staffing provided for POD (Points of dispensing);
  • Assisting hospitals and nursing facilities with disaster evacuations; and,
  • Providing basic primary medical care at community events.
WHAT WE NEED  In our immediate area, two counties continue to actively support their Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). The reality of cutbacks at both the State and Federal level have impacted disaster response capabilities nationwide and right here on the Emerald Coast.  With COVID and the increasing need for POD staffing in the Region, we will undoubtedly need all the support we can muster and we encourage more of those listed above to join us.
